RoadTo10K

Hi!

So I know you've all been so twiddling your thumbs wondering whether or not my experience selling at a farmers market went well.

So finally, the truth... it went well!

(p.s. stay to the end because I get sappy)

I made TikToks about my experience, which you can find here and here. Speaking of TikTok, I'm on a mission. I'm on a mission to get to 10k followers on TikTok by August 1st! So if you want to help a gal out, give me a follow at @inbloombyemily on TikTok ;) I'm also open to doing collabs with fellow tiktokers, so hit me up!

I also want to give a special shoutout to my new brand ambassadors! These women are killing it with the content, check them out below -

Brianna - @brie_burgess
Diana - @simplyjournaling101
Navneet - @freedomwith.nav
Aliya - @aliyahaas
Winnie - @winnielzhang
Alexandra - @alexandra.dieck

Lastly, I'll depart with some words of wisdom: If it was easy, everyone would do it.

Starting a business is hard. It's discouraging at times. It's a lot of work with little pay out at first, but I am endlessly grateful for everyone's support and encouragement as I grow. Every time I get down on myself, I remember you. I remember that if I'm able to help one person, it's all worth it. If one person picks up a journal one day and finds relief in it, I have done my job. But I know in my bones that there's so much to come and people to inspire with In Bloom. And I hope you know that it's all because of you; every follow, like, or message I get keeps me going. Excuse me while I get my tissues, but from the bottom of my heart, thank YOU.

With love,
Emily

Romaine calm! We're heading to the Farmers Market 🥬

Hi!

On Thursday I'm selling for the first time at a local farmers market! I've always been a sucker for a farmers or flea market. When I was in high school I loved going to the flea market with my cousins - we'd find the strangest things and meet the quirkiest people. I also have fond memories of going to the farmers market with my dad because he would never shy away from grabbing fresh bread and treats for the week ahead. Now that I'm thinking about it, during my senior year of college, my friends and I threw a "country fair" themed party and my room was the flea market/hippie room. At least I've stayed consistent all these years!

I've been looking into different decorations and materials I'll need for my table (TG for Staples). If anyone has any suggestions or tips on selling at farmers markets, please let me know! I'm excited to meet new people, hang out, and of course share my love of journaling. So if you're in the MA area, come say hi from 3:30-7:30pm at Choate Park in Medway this Thursday :)

I'll let you know how the farmers market goes in the next newsletter! Stay tuned, hopefully it doesn't kale my vibe (cringe I know, I'll stop).

Best,
Emily

New, new, new!

Hi!

I have exciting news - In Bloom has new journals, and Intro to Journaling (the PDF version) is live!! The journals comes in four beautiful colors and have our signature design on the front cover. The pages are unlined so you have the freedom to draw, collage, and write wherever your heart desires. Hope you love these as much as I do!

The PDF version of my Intro to Journaling program has also released. Through this program, you will get into the habit of daily journaling while you increase your creativity and self-awareness. I tested this program out in March with a few friends and volunteers, and now I am so happy to have released it to the greater community.

Another exciting development is that on Tuesday, I started teaching my Intro to Journaling program at San Diego Writers Ink. Not going to lie, it was a little intimidating at first because everyone was so much older than me. Once I got over that though, I realized that everyone was really nice and receptive to having a younger teacher. I know I'll learn a lot from them as well, and my program will only improve the more I teach.

I hope everyone is having a great start to June so far, and we'll talk soon!

Best,
Emily

Wait, why should I journal?

Hi!

Today I'd like to share some ~research backed~ (I know how fancy) benefits of journaling. According to Positive Psychology, journaling promotes creativity, improves mental health, increases sleep quality, and helps with achieving goals. Incidentally, a 2013 study found that people diagnosed with depression reported significantly lower depression scores after only three (!!) days of expressive writing for 20 minutes (Krpan, Kross, Berman, Deldin, Askren, & Jonides, 2013).

Also, not to mention, journaling is a habit of highly successful people. Did you know that John D. Rockefeller, Thomas Edison, Emma Watson, Marie Curie, and Lady Gaga are (or were) all journal keepers? You could be included in that list someday, too ;)

For me, the greatest benefit I get from journaling is stress management and goal setting. Needless to say, if I didn't journal, this whole In Bloom project wouldn't exist! Through writing, I can compartmentalize my thoughts so I'm not swept away with the BS and can focus on what I actually want to do.

I know sometimes it's hard to find a community of journalers if your current circle isn't interested in this stuff, so I created a Discord server (a group chat) where like-minded people can connect. There, we share tips on journaling, exchange writing prompts, give music/book recommendations, life advice, whatever! Simply click on the hyperlink to join - let me know if you have any issues with it.

Emily

Arlo Parks is a singer-songwriter and poet from the UK. Her first album, Collapsed in Sunbeams, released February 2021. The album chronicles bittersweet, intimate moments over lo-fi melodies. Her sensitive lyrics and cool delivery reminds me of something you may hear in a coming-of-age movie. My favorite track is "Green Eyes". Check out Arlo on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube.

Let's go back, back to the beginning

Hi!

Today I thought I'd share why I got into daily journaling in the first place. Let's go back to Summer 2019.

It was my first summer living on the other side of the country in Los Angeles. A few months prior, I packed my 2013 Toyota Corolla with all my belongings and made the exodus out west to work at an acting studio and pursue my acting career.

What I thought would be an inviting place to work soon became my personal hell. I remember calling my parents crying after my boss yelled at me for something outside of my control, and answering frantic emails at 11pm in fear that I'd never work in Hollywood again. It was a stressful time, and not to mention I knew basically no one in LA and had to build my life from the ground up. Though my roommate was very sweet, she was unfortunately very messy, and we didn't have too much in common. I also have memories of getting chased by people on my street when I was trying to walk back to my apartment at night. Good times!!

So I decided to look into therapy. It was expensive. My insurance didn't cover it, and I was getting paid essentially pennies at the acting studio, so I had to think of a cheaper way to let my frustrations out. That is where journaling came in.

Since then, I've been able to manage my stress in a much healthier way. I'm thankful that I am not in a bad work situation anymore, but we all have stress from time to time. So I let my stress out through writing, rather than bottling it up.

I hope this email reaches anyone who is thinking about getting started!

If you've tried to daily journal before and can't get into the habit, I have a program launching May 24th that will help you with this! I'm SO excited for the program to launch, and since you've joined the newsletter please enjoy 20% off with the code NEWSLETTER :)

First Newsletter!

Hi!

Hope you're doing well :) Thank you for engaging with In Bloom in some way, I appreciate you!

Through this project, I've been able to reconnect with people I haven't talked to in awhile (shout out Babson friends + family). I've also been able to meet new people from all over the world through Instagram and Tiktok - who knew there's such a large community of journalers!

Since I've never met some of you before, I thought I'd do a speed round of some get to know me facts. I would love for you to send me your facts as well!

  • I'm an actor. I used to live in LA, but because of the pandemic, I'm home on the East Coast.

  • I've been a vegetarian for 9 years

  • I'm half Russian and Irish (well, ancestrally at least; realistically I'm just American)

  • I play guitar and I'm obsessed with music

  • I tutor middle school kids

That's pretty much all there is to me. Just kidding, I hope I'm slightly more dimensional then just those four facts. I'll let you decide that though.

I started this journaling project because, well, I was bored, wanted to do something creative, and I wanted to help others. I'm so glad that I decided to go through with this project because it's kept me occupied and creative even in the depths of a New England winter. This spring, I decided to extend In Bloom a little bit further and create a program where I can connect with other like-minded people and help them get into the habit of daily journaling. Alas, my Intro to Journaling program was born. I tested it out in March and now will be offering it to the greater community. If you want to learn more about the program, hit me up! Let's get ~creative~ together. The next program starts on May 1st.

Anyways, I think this newsletter will be a fun way to keep up with friends, family, strangers, lovers (I'm kidding, relax), and everyone in between. Hopefully we can learn something from each another and one day can hang out in the real world.

And if you never want to hear from me again, that's okay too! You can simply unsubscribe, but I hope you stick around. I promise I'll only arrive in your inbox once or twice a month.
